Mother said that I was brought up by grandma and aunt. But I don’t remember this at all. What I remembered that later grandma moved to a small village Shao Zi Ying near Summer Palace and aunt married a cotton quilt maker and moved to town Qing Long Qiao just behind Summer Palace. Mother often took me to see them. As they were living so close to each other, every time either we visited them both or my aunt brought her two daughters, i.e., my cousins to joined us at grandma’s home.
We had to take tram to Xi Zhi Men, a city wall gate in Beijing, followed long-distance coach to the front gate of Summer Palace. What impressed me deeply on the way was when we passed Beijing University front gate in traditional architecture. From there I knew that we would soon reach the destination of the long coach journey. After that we still had to take some walk to grandma’s home.
While we were waiting for the coach by the city wall gate, I particularly liked to watch its high wall. The better dressed Beijing residents and farmers with bags on their backs formed a long queue to wait for the coaches. The city wall was obviously an urban and rural border. Inside were the hutongs and courtyards, and outside were willows, small rivers, fields and graves. Regretfully, before long, all these changed. All Beijing city walls disappeared. Under them now it is the underground railways. On the surface stand rows of skyscrapers both inside and outside the original city walls. With my age rise, I still miss Beijing city walls in my childhood and do not like at all so many modern “match boxes”.
Grandma was also tall and very thin. Her face showed kindness and strongness. Since she and my aunt stayed with us, she forced aunt, who had vowed never get married and look after grandma for ever, to marry someone, so that aunt swallowed a piece of gold to commit suicide. When she was rescued, someone first introduced to her a seventy years older landlord, and then the young cotton quilt maker Wang Fu Rui. She was not sure whom to marry. It was said that kid’s words were efficacious. So they asked my brother’s opinion. As Wang Fu Rui often took him out and bought candies for him, he commented that Wang was better. Therefore, Wang became my uncle and my aunt moved to Qing Long Qiao after she had married him.
