Hi, and welcome to today’s podcast!
Today, we’re going to talk about 红包
Now, with Chinese New Year approaching, 红包 is a really popular topic of conversation. But how do you explain what 红包 is to your non-Chinese friends?
新年快到了,那么你应该怎么样向外国朋友解释红包这个概念呢?
▼
First, let’s have a look at what 红包 is called in English.
There are several ways of translating the word.
1. You can say
red packet
packet = 包裹
This is what 红包 is called on WeChat
2. You can also say
red envelope
envelope = 信封
3. Some people also say:
lucky money
lucky = 幸运的
Personally, I think red packet is the best translation, because it’s closest to the Chinese meaning.
我个人认为 red packet 是最好的翻译,因为最接近中文的意思

So what if your friend asks you: what’s a red packet?
What should you say?
I would explain it like this
要是外国朋友问我红包究竟是什么,我会这样回答:
A red packet is a little red envelope filled with cash, which we give to people at Chinese New Year as a present.
红包是一个小小的红色信封,里面装着现金,我们会在新年把它当礼物送给别人。
The color red symbolises good luck in China, and it’s a very practical gift because people can buy whatever they like with the money.
红色在中国代表好运气,而且这是一个很实用的礼物,因为大家可以用来买自己所要的东西。
Usually, it’s older people that give red packets to younger people, especially to children.
一般是长辈送红包给晚辈的,特别是送给孩子们。
We also give red packets to newlyweds and newborns.
我们也会把红包送给刚结婚的新人和刚出生的小宝宝。
