英文原稿
A language is a cultural capsule.
There are aspects of cultures that won’t survive if they are translated into a dominant language.
Slaughtering an animal is normally related to brutality, never to kindness. But for the people of Tuva, historically nomadic herders, their language possesses the word ‘khoj ozeeri’ which means both a way of slaughtering livestock and kindness in human character.
Reaching through an incision in the sheep’s hide, the slaughterer severs a vital artery with his fingers, allowing the animal to quickly slip away without alarm, so peacefully that one must check its eyes to see if it is dead.
khoj ozeeri also means a ceremony by which a family can kill, skin, and butcher a sheep so neatly in two hours in one’s good cloth without spilling a drop of blood.
If a Tuvan killed an animal by means of a gun or a knife, they’d be arrested for brutality.
