Hyde Park
Hyde Park(海德公园)is a major park in Central London. It is the largest of four Royal Parks(皇家公园)that form a chain(链)from the entrance of Kensington Palace(肯辛顿宫)through Kensington Gardens(肯辛顿花园), via(通过) Hyde Park Corner and Green Park(格林公园)past the main entrance(主要入口)to Buckingham Palace(白金汉宫).
The park was established(建立)by Henry VIII in 1536 when he took the land from Westminster Abbey(威斯敏斯特教堂)and used it as a hunting ground(猎场). It opened to the public in the early 17th century and quickly became popular, particularly for May Day parades(五一游行). Major improvements(改善,提高)occurred(发生)in the early 18th century under the direction(指导) of Queen Caroline(卡罗琳王后).Several duels(决斗)took place in Hyde Park during this time, often involving members of the nobility(贵族). The Great Exhibition(博览会)of 1851 was held in the park, for which the Crystal Palace(水晶宫), designed by Joseph Paxton, was erected(建造;安装).
Free speech and demonstrations(示范演讲;示威游行)have been a key feature(特色,特征,容貌)of Hyde Park since the 19th century.Speaker's Corner(民主讲台;演讲者之角)has been established as a point of free speech and debate since 1872. In the late 20th century, the park became known for holding large-scale(大规模的)free rock music concerts, featuring groups such as Pink Floyd(平克·弗洛伊德乐队), The Rolling Stones(滚石乐队)and Queen(皇后乐队).
Hyde Park contains several sporting facilities, including several football pitches(球场)and a tennis centre. There are numerous(很多的)cycle paths(自行车道), and horse riding is popular.For the 2012 Summer Olympics, the park hosted the triathlon(三项全能)and the 10 km open water swimming events. The park has also hosted the ITU(国际电信联盟)World Triathlon Grand Final(世界三项全能总决赛).
