A young man went to apply for a position in a big company. The director discovered that the young man was excellent, so he asked, “Did you get any scholarships in school?”
The young man answered, “None.”
“Was it your father who paid for your school fees?” asked the director.
“My father passed away when I was little. It was my mother who paid for my school fees.”
“What did your mother do?”
“She was a cleaner.”
“Have you ever helped her wash the clothes before?”
“Never. She always wanted me to study and read more books.”
The director said, “I have a request. When you go back home today, go and clean your mother’s hands, and then see me tomorrow morning.”
The young man went back, and did as the director requested. His tears fell as he did that. It was the first time that he had noticed his mother’s hands were so wrinkled. Then the young man realized that it was this pair of hands that washed clothes every day to enable him to pay his school fees. After finishing cleaning his mother’s hands, the young man quietly washed all the remaining clothes. That night, they talked for a long time.
Next morning, the young man went to the director’s office. The director noticed the tears in his eyes, and asked, “Can you tell me what you did and learned yesterday?”
The young man answered, “First, I know what appreciation is now. Without my mother, there wouldn’t be the successful me today. Then, I realize how difficult it is to get something done. Finally, I have come to appreciate the importance and value of family relationship.”
“This is what I am looking for. I want a person who can appreciate the help of others, a person who knows the sufferings of others to get things done, and a person who wouldn’t put money as his only goal in life. You are hired,” said the director.
