The Facebook CEO and cofounder Mark Zuckerberg said that his new challenge was to connect with more Americans in an effort to mend societal divisions made by the twin forces of technology and globalization. It means that he will travel to about 30 states in 2017.
This is the latest personal challenge Zuckerberg has given himself. This year’s challenge was formed from what Zuckerberg describes as a turning point in history caused by the combination of technology and globalization.
Zuckerberg is famous for his ambitious challenges. In the past few years, he has built artificial intelligence for his home, learned Mandarin, read 25 books and run 365 miles.
“After a tumultuous last year, my hope for this challenge is to get out and talk to more people about how they’re living, working and thinking about the future,” said Zuckerberg.
“Recently, I have traveled around the world and visited many cities,” Zuckerberg wrote in his post. “Now, I’m excited to explore more of our country and meet more people here.”
With this challenge, Zuckerberg started a national debate over the societal impact of technology and Silicon Valley’s disconnection with big part of its users. The technology boom has created massive wealth and high-paying jobs in technology hubs such as Silicon Valley, but technological advances and increased automation have destroyed jobs elsewhere.
Zuckerberg’s company, Facebook, is at the forefront of an industry widely pushed into artificial intelligence which could propel more advances and threaten more jobs. A recent report said new technology that increases productivity and efficiency by automating tasks performed by workers could wipe out millions of jobs.
