This year sees the 120th anniversary of Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. New York’s Empire State Building turned blue on May 21 to celebrate its 120th birthday. It was the very first time that the Empire State Building had been specially lighted up to honor a Chinese university. It’s often lit up for special occasions, and it was once lit up to celebrate the Chinese lunar New Year. Until now, it has only been lit up in honor of such universities in New York as New York University and Columbia University. Located in the historical and picturesque city of Hangzhou, Zhejiang University is one of China’s oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher education. The main root of the university is Qiushi Academy, which was founded in 1897. In 1928, it was renamed Zhejiang University. Zhejiang University went all the way through difficulties and adversities to establish itself as one of the leading universities in China. It’s even honored as “Oriental Cambridge”. It has become a top comprehensive university in the world. Zhejiang University encourages all its faculty members and students to follow the spirit of “Seeking Truth and Pursuing Innovation”, which is the university’s motto. The spirits of learning and pursuing the truth have been passed down from generation to generation over the past 120 years.
