It has been a theme of science fiction for decades. It is also a good present for tourists grappling with directions to their hotels. The smart earpiece that lets its wearers understand other nationalities by instantly translating foreign languages has been available for about three months.
The £140 device, which can translate eight languages, is inspired by translators. It can translate sentences in three to five seconds using artificial intelligence language software. It is the first earpiece of its kind to translate languages without needing a constant connection to a mobile phone or Wi-Fi signal, and can translate between English, French, Japanese, Italian, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, German and Chinese. There is one problem, however, the speaker and the listener will have to wear a device each time for the translation software to work.
An Australian company said that it would put an end to awkward international meetings between politicians and business leaders. At the same time, several technology companies are developing language earpieces aimed at making embarrassing holiday encounters a thing of the past, while Google recently upgraded its translation software so that it is able to understand full sentences, instead of phrases word by word.
