Yan Geling is a famous prolific writer. A good number of her novels and short stories have been made into movies and TV dramas since 1981. Now she has become one of the most popular novelists and screen writers in China and Western countries.
In fact, her life is as colorful as her works. Born in Shanghai in 1958 into a family of writers, Yan became a dancer in the army at 12. She danced for eight years and started writing at 20.
Yan went to the US for further study in 1989 and obtained a master’s degree in Fiction Writing from Columbia College, Chicago. In 1992, she married an American diplomat and has been writing ever since, from the US to Africa to Asia, wherever life takes her.
“What we experience makes us who we are,” said Yan. She lives in a different place every three years with her husband, traveling and writing all the time. She always sees the bright side of her nomadic life and feels lucky to have a fresh eye to be curious about each place she has lived in.
Due to her background and experiences, Yan obtains her unique vision from the cultural differences of various countries and nationalities. “Traveling far and wide stops me from being trapped in any certain trend,” said Yan.
