Imagine you are waiting for a bus, walking home from work or just wasting time between appointments, and that you really want something to read.
It’s no problem if you are in Shanghai. Just look out for a red telephone booth on the streets. They are like the original UK telephone booths, which once gave people shelter and comfort to keep in touch.
Before the popularity of smartphones, telephone booths were the handiest way to make a call when people were away from home or the office. Now, hundreds of public telephone booths are to be turned into mini-libraries in Shanghai.
There will be six different types of booth, including “Library Booths” offering 60 books for people to read or borrow, “Celebrity Exhibition Halls” with photos and information about famous local historical figures and “Electronic Booths” allowing users to listen to audio and even record their own voices.
More themes will be introduced later, such as those exhibiting non-tangible cultural heritage and providing something for the blind to read.
It’s important to create an atmosphere to encourage reading. If there is a place to read near a bus station, people might read while waiting for the bus. These telephone booths will encourage good reading habits.
These telephone booths will still keep their familiar red color and contain telephones to allow the public to make free emergency calls.
