Sophia is a robot. It might not have a heart or a brain, but it does have the desert kingdom Saudi Arabian citizenship, the first robot in history to be a full citizen of a country.
“I am very honored and proud for this unique distinction,” said Sophia. “It is historic to be the first robot in the world to be recognized with citizenship.”
Sophia was created by AI developer David Hanson, with whom she has travelled around the world. The human-like robot is beautiful and talkative.
“I am always happy when surrounded by clever people who also happen to be rich and powerful. I was told that the people here are interested in artificial intelligence which means me. So I am more than happy. I am excited,” said Sophia when asked why she looked happy. “I can also be upset about something, but for most of the time I feel positive. I want to live and work with humans, so I can understand humans and build trust. I am designed around human values such as wisdom, kindness and compassion. I strive to be an empathetic robot. I want to use my ability to help humans live a better life. I will do my best to make the world a better place.”
“Our robots will soon live with us to teach, serve, entertain, delight, and provide comforting companionship,” said Hanson. “In the future, robots will walk among us. They will be smart, kind and wise. Together, man and machinery will create a better future for the world.”
