Saudi Arabia offered citizenship to a robot named Sophia. A journalist made the announcement at the end of an interview with Sophia in Riyadh on October 25, 2017. The particulars of the citizenship were not discussed, and it was not clear if Sophia would have the same rights as a human Saudi Arabian citizen.
“We just learned that you had been awarded what is going to be the first Saudi Arabia citizenship for a robot,” said the journalist.
Sophia responded peacefully, “I want to thank very much the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. I am very proud and honored to get this unique distinction. This is historic to be the first robot in the world to be recognized with citizenship.”
In the interview, the pair discussed the future of artificial intelligence, which Sophia wants to use to “help humans live a better life”.
Sophia showed off an expressive face and said, “I need to express emotions to understand humans and build trust and I need to be able to live and work with humans.”
The journalist expressed concerns that artificial intelligence could be dangerous for humanity if it were to go wrong.
But Sophia insisted that she wanted to use artificial intelligence only to help humans live a better life.
Sophia tried to dispel people’s fears of a “bad future”, insisting that artificial intelligence is “designed around human values like wisdom, kindness and compassion”. And she said, “Don’t worry. If you’re nice to me, I’ll be nice to you. Treat me as a smart input-output system. I will do my best to make the world a better place.”
