World Cup 2018 will be held in Russia in its 11 cities from June 14 to July 15, 2018. It is the first time in its history for Russia to host the World Cup. Moreover, it is the first World Cup held in Eastern Europe, and it is the first time when the World Cup is held on the land of two continents — Europe and Asia.
Russia is one of the world’s large countries with a population of over 140 million. More than half of the population are football fans. World Cup 2018 is a powerful magnet and living proof of the fact that human beings have invented a ball game which looks simple yet magical: the championship will unite 190 peoples in Russia and about 2,000 nationalities from around the world.
Just as in the rest of the world, football is the most popular sport in Russia. The game came to Russia in the 1910s at the suggestion of English engineers who worked at the factories and quickly spread throughout the country. Today it is not just a form of entertainment. It’s part of Russia’s national culture.
For the host countries, the World Cup has become a chance to show their national achievements with the whole world looking on. Russia is a country of rich athletic tradition and lots of experience in organizing big sports events, including football ones. Each year, dozens of football competitions take place in Russia.
