Polar Bears spend most of their time roaming the sea ice in search of seals. And seals spend most of their time under that ice, avoiding polar bears. But climate change is giving polar bears additional challenges in search of food.
Sea ice is now drifting fast. That’s a problem because polar bears prefer to stay in a specific range. Throughout their range, they seem to have a sense of place. And now the ice is drifting westward, so to remain in their traditional range, they have to constantly be walking eastward.
All that walking requires extra fuel. On average, a single bear eats 31 to 33 seals per year. But now they have to eat one to three more.
And not only is the ice drifting faster, it’s also melting more, giving the bears less of the platform they use to hunt for food. They need more seals but have a tougher time tracking them. These are all threatening polar bears’ survival.
If we want to be responsible citizens of this planet, we have to do everything in our power to stop the trend of sea ice loss. If that does not happen, polar bears could one day disappear from our planet.
