介绍:
Nearly 790 million people around the world don’t get enough to eat. Most of them live in developing countries. In many parts of the developing world it is hard to bring food to people. But there is a deeper problem. Growing or raising enough food to fight world hunger requires land. If we raise cattle for their meat, it needs a lot of farmland and other resources. A group of researchers in the USA may have found a way to get protein to hungry people — growing algae. They say that the world in fact is not short of calories — the energy-producing value in food. What it’s short of are proteins and essential fatty acids. Algae is naturally very high in proteins and in lipids, or fatty acids, which are the two things that the world really needs. So they have created a dried, powdered form of algae. It is a very nice green powder and perfectly edible. Not only is the algae rich in protein and easy to transport, it also tastes pretty good. Growing algae uses less land than other kinds of protein. The researchers have a big idea that algae farms could one day replace the huge amounts of land used by farmers to produce protein in beef or soybeans. In the near future, algae may be one way to help feed the world’s hungry people.
