All the people on an island in western Ireland were excited. They were celebrating a new beach. But actually, it was the return of an old beach.
The beach was washed away over 30 years ago. It disappeared into the Atlantic Ocean in the spring of 1984, when storms washed all the sands away, leaving only rocks and rock pools behind.
Then one day, the villagers lived near the beach were surprised when a cold spell combined with winds blowing from the north brought hundreds of tons of sand and shells back in the area by the tide. This occurred over a 9-day period. As a result, there is now a 300-metre-long golden beach.
A villager said, “Before it disappeared, the beach had been there for as long as living memory until 1984. It’s so nice to have the beach back. It is a perfect example of the power of nature and how the coast can change in a few days.”
The beautiful beach used to be a popular destination for people from around the globe. Before it disappeared, hotels, guesthouses and restaurants overlooked the beach, but when the beach got lost, almost all of them closed down. Now people are delighted with their born-again beach. It’s great to walk on the soft sands, and all the wildlife has also come back, which is wonderful.
