There was a feeling of great excitement. The Queen was coming to lunch. “Right,”said the Mayor. “We must have our town looking spotless, with not a leaf out of place.”
Harry was given a spade and a wheelbarrow. It was his job to tidy all the edges. Poppy was given a dustpan and brush. She was asked to sweep the council steps.
Tom was given a broom and a rubbish bag. His job was to sweep up all the leaves. Milly and Molly were each given a pair of clippers. Their task was to trim the lavender hedge.
George was given a rake and a wheelbarrow. He cleared up after Milly and Molly. Sophie was given a cloth and a tin of polish. Her job was to polish the brass.
Alf put his boots on and mowed the council lawns. Elizabeth was given a rubbish bag. She was asked to pick up every scrap of litter.
Jack offered to help Ernie in the rubbish truck. He collected the rubbish bags. Meg put on her overalls. She was asked to help the painter.
Humphrey was given a bucket and scoop. He had the important job of picking up all the soft and messy bits! And the Mayor……,well, he gave advice and encouragement wherever it was needed.
Harry,Poppy,Tom,Milly and Molly,George,Sophie,Alf,Elizabeth,Jack,Meg. And Humphrey worked like little beavers.
When all was done…and the town was spotless, everyone just had time to rush home and scrub up. Before the Queen swished up in her big, black, shiny car.
"What a beautiful town you have,” said the Queen, “Is it always this tidy?”“Yes…well…no…well…sort of…sometimes…we tidied it up for you,”clamoured Milly and Molly. “Gracious me,”said the Queen.” Thank you, I will ask the Mayor if you can all join me for lunch.”
Everyone had the best lunch they’d ever had.
And as the Queen rose to leave she said,” Now,when you come to my town, you must all come and have lunch with me.”
