第二章：天下皆知美之为美

第二章 原文 天下皆知美之为美，斯恶已；皆知善之为善，斯不善已。故有无相生，难易相成，长短相较，高下相倾，音声相和，前后相随。是以圣人处无为之事，行不言之教，万物作焉而不辞，生而不有，为而不恃，功成而弗居。夫唯弗居，是以不去。 译文  天下都知道美是什么，丑自然就存在了；都知道什么是善，一定也知道什么是不善。所以，有和无相待而生，难和易相待而成，长和短相待而显，高和下相待而倾倚，音和声相待而和谐，前和后相待而顺序相随。所以圣人行事，顺乎自然，崇尚无为，实行不言的教诲。顺应万物自然的生长而不加干预，创造万物而不占有，施泽万物而不将这当成是倚仗、凭借的手段，有了功劳而不居功自傲。正因为他不居功自傲，所以他的功德不灭。 英文版 Under heaven all can see beauty as beauty, only because there is ugliness. All can know good as good only because there is evil. Being and nonbeing produce each other. The difficult is born in the easy. Long is defined by short, the high by the low. Before and after go along with each other. So the sage lives openly with apparent duality and paradoxical unity. The sage can act without effort and teach without words. Nurturing things without possessing them, he works, but not for rewards; he competes, but not for results. When the work is done, it is forgotten. That is why it lasts forever.
