On Academic Cheating
[00:10.97]Nowadays, "academic cheating" has been a high frequency phrase in media reports.
[00:19.71]From time to time,
[00:21.64]names of some professors appear in scandals of academic cheating.
[00:27.68]They deliberately copy other scholars' research results
[00:33.14]in their own papers and books.
[00:36.09]Why does cheating become a usual phenomenon in this field?
[00:41.41]First and foremost,
[00:43.65]it is because some scholars lack personal integrity.
[00:47.85]In order to obtain higher academic status,
[00:51.70]they are willing to betray their conscience.
[00:54.62]Second, academic field is inevitably affected
[00:59.34]by the climate of pursuing fame and money.
[01:03.30]The heated competition for titles and subsidy stimulates academic cheating.
[01:09.78]Third, the academic review system does little work
[01:14.96]to find out the piratic contents or prevent the illegal articles from being published.
[01:22.21]In my opinion, the short-term benefits such as fame and money
[01:28.49]are indeed charming to everyone.
[01:31.43]However, one should resist this kind of temptations,
[01:36.10]for if academic cheating is disclosed,
[01:39.45]one may lose not only his reputation and money,
[01:43.94]but also his freedom.
