Fewer Students Studying Engineering
Recently, Hu Ruiwen, a member of the State Education Consulting Committee, expressed worry over the lack of students choosing engineering as a major. He says: 1.17 million students enrolled as engineering majors back in 2010; the figure is 4.4 times of that in 1998, however, during the same period, the total number of college recruitment has increased six times since then. Many engineering students transfer to other majors.
Statistics from www.cuaa.net shows that, in the year 2000, engineering students, including electronic information, physics and construction, was the first choice for top Gaokao scorers. After the year 2000, top scorers turned to economics and management.
Many engineering students turn to economics and management when they want to continue studying for a Master's Degree, as well.
