Republican senator Mitch McConnell, in line to be the next majority leader, says his first priority is to "get the Senate back to normal". "The Senate in the last few years doesn't do anything. We don't even vote. The first thing I need to do is to get the Senate back to normal. That means working more. I don't think we've had any votes on Friday in anybody's memory. We are going to function. This gridlock and dysfunction can be ended.  It can be ended by having a Senate that actually…(Clears his throat) …that actually works." In the meantime, US President Barack Obama says it's his responsibility to break Washington's gridlock. "Still, as president, I have a unique responsibility to try and make this town work. So, to everyone who voted, I want you to know that I hear you. To the two-thirds of voters who chose not to participate in the process yesterday, I hear you, too." Obama has invited Democratic and Republican leaders of Congress to the White House for a meeting on Friday.
