Q&A: Human-centered Urbanization
The recent China City Management Forum focused on innovation and regional development in China&`&s new type urbanization.
The human-centered urbanization and market based approach followed in urban China have grabbed the attention of many experts as well as the public.
Our reporter Liu Xiangwei was there.
China has undergone a rapid urbanization process with about 52 percent of the urban population living in cities.
Xu Weixin, Vice-Principle of the Party School of the Central Committee of C.P.C said that this rapid urbanization has created some new problems,
"Where should people go? How do we allocate the land resources? Where should we get the money? How can we solve the housing problem? How will we protect the environment? Are questions among many other issues."
As China&`&s urbanization rate in 2013 is 53.7 percent, China is likely to enter a new stage of urbanization. If the urbanization in the past can be characterized by the rapid expansion of cities, currently the speed has slowed down. However, quality will be more important than the quantity.
Liu Yuzhu, assistant Minister of Culture said in his speech in the CCMF that, one of the most important tasks is to improve the quality of urbanization, so as to absorb the cities&`& new immigrants, help them become modern citizens, and improve the cities&`& planning and construction.
"Cultural and ecological construction, which have been long ignored, play key roles in the new type of urbanization. Instead of focusing on expanding the cities&`& size and space, the new type of urbanization focuses on offering high quality living environment for the new residents in cities. "
In the past, the government played a key role in urbanization. But with the development of the Chinese economy, more attention should be given to the role of markets in the allocation of resources.
Liu Wei, vice president of Peking University, said that the key issue in China&`&s urbanization is to properly balance the relations between the government and the market in terms of institutions.
"The relationship between the government and the market should be complementary. The Government needs to act when market failure happens. And the market can promote the development of China&`&s urbanization more efficiently. The government needs to gradually return the resources which should be allocated by the market to the market."
China&`&s urbanization is becoming a major driving force for China&`&s future development. Nearly 70 percent of the population in China are expected to live in urban areas by 2035. New Urbanization should not be simply the physical expansion of cities, but to improve the quality of urbanization.

Report: China&`&s Crazy Stock Market
Finally, let&`&s talk the about dramatic gains and sell-off in China&`&s stock market in the past week.
On Monday, Chinese stock benchmark index regained 3,000-point mark.
Yet on Tuesday, Chinese stocks plummeted in a break from a months-long boom.
The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index slumped more than five percent, the sharpest fall in more than five years.
The tumble brought the index below the 3-thousand point threshold. This comes after the index broke 3-thousand on Monday, the first time since 2011.
Later in the week, indices regained strength and then faltered.
For more on the stock market, Zhao Yang speaks with Einar Tangen, former Chairman of the State of Wisconsin&`&s International Trade Council.
