Shanghai is the "Race for Water Odyssey" expedition's only stop in China. Marco Simeoni, the man behind the project, said millions of tonnes of plastic waste end up in the sea every year and people must take action to preserve the planet's most important ecosystem. The yacht, 21 meters long and 17 meters wide, set sail on March 15 from France. It will focus on five rubbish "vortexes" where waste accumulates in large quantities. The research team, who are collecting samples and analyzing data while at sea, will conduct seminars in Shanghai to raise awareness of ocean protection. The yacht's next stop is South Africa. trimaran yacht n. 三体游艇 三体游艇即三个船体并列的游艇，属于三体船的一种具体形式。三体船顾名思义由三个船体组成，共享一个主甲板及上层结构。这种船型可以提高船舶的稳定性和耐波性，是英国首先提出来的。 plastic pollution n. 塑料污染 即塑料垃圾造成的污染。塑料不易降解，影响环境的美观，且所含成分有潜在危害。因塑料用做包装材料多为白色，所以塑料污染也叫白色污染（white pollution）。 odyssey n. 长途的冒险行程 此次探索之旅于今年3月中旬从法国正式起航，预计为期300天，用odyssey一词来形容是非常贴切的。此外，该活动希望引起人们对保护海洋的重视，所以官方名称中出现了Race for Water的字眼。 tonnes n. 吨 tonnes是tonne的复数形式，tons是ton的复数形式，两者都很常见，中文也都是“吨”。一般情况下可以把它们看成是同义词，尤其是在用“tonnes/tons of …”来泛指数量巨大的时候。但是如果要深究，两者其实是有区别的：1 tonne = 1000 kg，没有例外。 1 ton则要取决于是英式英语还是美式英语。1 British ton = 2240 pounds = 1016 kg, 1 North American ton = 2000 pounds = 907 kg。因为英式的量稍微多一些，所以British ton也叫long ton或者gross ton。美式的量少一些，所以North American ton也叫short ton或者net ton。（这么多数字确实比较让人头大，所以日常对话里没有必要深究，用拼写相对简单的ton和tons就行。） vortex n. 漩涡 一种自然现象，指水流遇低洼处所激成的螺旋形水涡。可引申为“中心、聚集地”的意思。本文中的rubbish vortex是指大量塑料垃圾聚集的地方。 the research team, who are collecting samples… team是典型的集合名词，一般作单数处理，比如：The team works very well. 此处因为强调团队里具体的人（只有具体的人才能做collecting samples、analyzing data这些具体的事），所以team在这里相当于team members，后面搭配的be动词自然就是are了。
