What’s it like to be a woman in modern China?
China is a nation where gender equality is enshrined in law. Old fashioned attitudes like the Confucian criticism of ‘assertive women’ is being replaced with more up-to-date thinking.
The 2010 UN gender equality ranking placed China at 38, just below the US at 37 and well above Brazil at 80.
Since 2008 the civil service has employed more women in leadership positions. In 2012 China became the third nation to send a woman into space, and it’s common for women to run companies or their own businesses.
They’re also in high positions in the military and political life, or may decide to stay at home to raise a family… in which case they’re guaranteed at least 90 days maternity leave, while the dads get a month off work.
