So when Chinese people say hi, they say it in lots of different ways. 850 million Chinese people speak mandarin. That still leaves 450 million, 35% of the population, who might have difficulties communicating when they visit other parts of China. So, across the country, an increasing number are learning to speak mandarin Chinese. And because language is a bridge between cultures, 300 million are also learning English and making new friends around the world.
