I will find out if she is a princess, said the queen, I will put this pea in her bed. The queen put the pea on the bed. Then she put a mattress over the pea. Then she put mattress upon mattress upon mattress and quilt upon quilt upon quilt. Now we will find out if she is a princess, said the queen. I have made your bed, said the queen to the princess, now you can go to sleep. The king blew out the candles and they all went to bed.
But the princess could not sleep. She tried to sleep on her back. She tried to sleep on her front. And she tried to sleep on her side. But she could not get to sleep. When they all got up, the queen asked, did you have a good sleep? No, said the princess, I did not like your bed, there was a big lump in it. The queen was very happy.
