Words like biggest and best come to mind when referring to America’s most populated city, New York. It is such a city a visitor would be hard pressed to describe it without resorting to superlative. New York has always been the nation’s cultural capital, it is also one of the most populous urban areas in the world. The city consists of five boroughs: The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island.
Manhattan is a major commercial, financial, and cultural center of both the United States and the world, located primarily on Manhattan Island at the mouth of the Hudson River. Manhattan has many famous landmarks, tourist attractions, museums, and universities. It is the center of New York City and the New York metropolitan region, hosting the seat of city government and a large portion of the area’s employment, business, and recreational activities. Manhattan has the largest central business district in the United States, is the site of both the New York Stock Exchange. It is also home to the headquarters of the United Nations.
Throughout the first half of the 20th century, the city became a world center for industry, commerce, and communication. The opening of the New York City Subway in 1904 helped bind the new city together. In the 1920s, New York city was a major destination for African Americans during the Great Migration from the American South. In the 1960s, New York suffered from economic problems, rising crime rates and racial tension, which reached a peak in the 1970s. By the 1990s, racial tensions had calmed, crime rates dropped dramatically, and waves of new immigrants arrived from Asia and Latin America.
