It is the fourth session of the 12th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. More than 2,000 political advisors will be in attendance during the next two weeks, expected to offer proposals and insights for the government on running state affairs. The 13th five-year plan for national development will be high on the agenda. The event runs almost in parallel with the annual session of the National People's Congress, China's top legislature. That session opens on Saturday. China says it hopes the newly-adopted UN Security Council resolution on North Korea can be fully implemented. The council unanimously adopted the resolution on Wednesday, imposing much tougher sanctions on Pyongyang for its recent nuclear test and rocket launch. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hong Lei has stressed that the sanctions are not an end in themselves, and only dialog and negotiation can fundamentally solve the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula. He also says the sanctions should avoid affecting ordinary people, noting that's also an important part of the resolution. North Korea has fired six short-range projectiles in an apparent show of force after a new resolution on tougher sanctions against Pyongyang was passed at the UN Security Council. South Korea says the projectiles were fired into the East Sea, flying about 100 to 150 kilometers. They are believed to be short-range missiles or shells from rocket launchers. A similar launch happened in June last year. Malaysia's transport minister says there is a "high probability" the debris found in Mozambique is from a Boeing 777. He made the comment based on pictures of the recovered aircraft part. Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 is the only missing 777. Liow Tiong Lai also says the area where the debris was found matches investigators' predictions of where debris from the plane would end up. He says a Malaysian team will be heading to Mozambique, where authorities are helping to comb the area for other possible debris. Earlier, Australia's transport minister also said the location where the the debris was found is consistent with drift modeling related to the search for the missing aircraft. Strong aftershocks rocked Indonesia early Thursday following a massive undersea earthquake Wednesday night. There have been no reports of deaths or damages from the quake, which had a magnitude of 7.8. The tremor caused panic in the Sumatran island port of Padang as people tried to reach higher ground when a tsunami warning was issued. No tsunami occurred. The National Meteorological Agency says there were six aftershocks during the night, but is calling for calm as they have been diminishing in strength. Weather authorities in China have issued a yellow alert for smog in the country's northern and eastern regions, including Beijing and Tianjin. The country's weather observatory says smog will envelope those two cities along with the provinces of Hebei, Henan, Shandong, Jiangsu, and Liaoning until Friday night. Polluted air was reported in more than 160 cities across the country on Wednesday after the smog began forming the day before. Yellow is the second alert level of China's four-tier system, higher than blue but lower than red and orange. Chinese disciplinary authorities are planning to release a second list of Interpol Red Notices, stepping up the pursuit of fugitives. Local governments are also being asked to compile information on corrupt officials on the run to improve information management and sharing. China released its list of 100 wanted fugitives last April to intensify its worldwide fugitive hunt. So far 19 suspects on the list have been repatriated. Zhejiang, a province in east China, has launched an anti-mosquito campaign to fight the Zika virus, as part of preparations for the G20 summit which will be held in its capital Hangzhou in September. The campaign will last eight months. Zhejiang has warm, wet weather and is heating up as spring approaches, which is likely to increase the risk of transmission of the mosquito-borne virus. Four of the 10 confirmed Zika cases in China were reported in Zhejiang. China is building an underground lab in the southwest that will be dedicated to the study of the origin of elements. The nuclear astrophysics lab is being built as part of the Jinping Underground Lab, which is 2,400 meters deep in a mountain in Sichuan. Researchers hope to use the facility to explore the birth of heavy elements by measuring neutron source reactions. The new lab will provide a "clean" space for a number of physical and cosmologic experiments, including those related to the search for "dark matter."
