'Twas The Night Before Christmas
——by Clement C. Moore
'Twas the night before Christmas, when allthrough the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even amouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney withcare,
In hopes that St Nicholas soon would bethere.
圣诞节前夜,整间屋子静悄悄;
万物沉默,连老鼠也不吵不闹;
在壁炉前,挂上长袜,动作是如此轻缓;
圣诞老人快快出现;这是最殷切的期盼;
The children were nestled all snug in theirbeds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced intheir heads.
And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in mycap,
Had just settled our brains for a longwinter’s nap.
孩子们躺在小被窝里,暖洋洋的那么舒服;
美梦中的小糖果在脑海里翩翩起舞;
放下所有的心事,在冬夜里睡个长觉;
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was thematter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up thesash.
我从床上一跃而起,要去细细端详;
我冲到窗前,快的像一道电光;
拉开了窗帘,拉开了窗框;
The moon on the breast of the new-fallensnow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objectsbelow.
When, what to my wondering eyes shouldappear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tinyreindeer.
With a little old driver, so lively andquick,
I knew in a moment it must be St Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers theycame,
And he whistled, and shouted, and calledthem by name!
"Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancerand Vixen!
On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, on Donner andBlitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of thewall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash awayall!"
As dry leaves that before the wildhurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount tothe sky.
So up to the house-top the coursers theyflew,
With the sleigh full of Toys, and StNicholas too.
雪橇上装满玩具,还载着圣诞老人;
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on theroof
The prancing and pawing of each littlehoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turningaround,
Down the chimney St Nicholas came with abound.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head tohis foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished withashes and soot.
A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler, just openinghis pack.
烟灰和尘土弄脏了衣服;
His eyes-how they twinkled! his dimples howmerry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like acherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like abow,
And the beard of his chin was as white asthe snow.
The stump of a pipe he held tight in histeeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like awreath.
He had a broad face and a little roundbelly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlfulof jelly!
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly oldelf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite ofmyself!
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing todread.
他又圆又胖,像个乐呵呵的老顽童;
He spoke not a word, but went straight tohis work,
And filled all the stockings, then turnedwith a jerk.
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose!
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave awhistle,
And away they all flew like the down of athistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove outof sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all agood-night!"
