With a production cost of 200-million yuan of RMB, "Helios" is a film about military elites from China and South Korea that team up to help deal with a nuclear weapons crisis.
The film boasts a strongman-cast, including Hong Kong actor Jacky Cheung, Nick Cheung, Taiwan actor Chang Chen, mainland actor Wang Xueqi and South Korean heart-throb Ji Jin-Hee.
Chang Chen, who plays the title villain named "Helios," says that each member of the cast prepared for their roles by learning the fundamentals of handgun shooting.
"The funniest thing ahead of filming is that we had to take shooting lessons, including shooting real bullets. It's an exciting thing for an actor to have such an experience. We learned all sorts of things, from how to pull out a handgun, standing straight, shooting and placing your finger off the trigger guard. Every actor trained to get good at using guns for 'Helios.' "
Having been nominated many times at the Hong Kong film awards and other Chinese film awards, Hong Kong veteran actor Nick Cheung Ka-fai plays Chief Inspector Lee Yin-ming in the movie.
"The police officer I play is a cool guy. He is the highest-ranking official I have ever been cast as for any role as a cop."
Nick Cheung used to be a Royal Hong Kong Police officer for four years before switching careers to become a professional actor.
In "Helios", he works with another inspector, Fan Ka-ming, and leads the Counter Terrorism Response Unit of the Hong Kong Police Force.
Shawn Yue (余文乐) plays Nick Cheung's partner, Fan Ka-ming.
"As soon as I appear in the film, I start shooting, so I actually have little dialogue."
"Helios," or "Chi Dao," as it will be known in China, mixes all the ingredients action fans will love--deafening explosions, bone-crunching fisticuffs and a setting dripping with near-apocalyptic fatalism.
The film is a follow-up to the 2012 award-winning blockbuster "Cold War" ,or "Han Zhan," directed by duo Sunny Luk and Longman Leung. "Helios" hits theatres on April 30th.
