At the bottom of the chest lies an old book that looks completely untouched. The smell of the book with a bamboo paper fragrance fills the room quickly. It immediately transports Mum’s memories to a time that was 16 years ago.
It was an uncommon evening with heavily falling snow and a silver moon hung in the sky. The temperature outside fell fellow zero centigrade. Mum’s puppy kept rubbing his head against Mum’s leg while she was taking care of me, Rusty, a newborn baby. The dog tried to draw Mum’s attention to something outside the cabin.
“Oh my Lord!” Mum let out a little cry of astonishment. There was an infant girl lying in a basket on the doorstep, covered lightly in snow.
Mum gazed at the baby from every angle. She looked noble but with pure natural beauty. Her pleasant smile melted Mum’s heart. Mum took her inside the shanty and named her Frosty, my twin sister.
Inside the basket, there was also an old book underneath the baby’s wrist. Mum moved the girl’s arm aside and picked up the book. It had a special bamboo paper smell. A four-digit number, “1031”, was shown on the front cover. However, all the pages inside the book were completely blank. The whole thing felt like a holy mystery. Mum had no way of knowing the purpose of the book. It was beyond her understanding. But she felt the book was special and should be kept in a safe place. Mum thought about it for a few minutes. She didn’t feel safe to leave the booking any storage bin or cabinet with other household stuff. She decided to hide it in a secret chest.
“What is that, Mum?”
Frosty’s voice brings Mum back to the present from her deepest memories. “I guess this is supposedly for you, my dear,” Mum hands Frosty the strange book.
