9-Chapter 5:Rough Seas 第五章: 海流汹涌-01 文章:(中文意思请听节目) About three decades ago… The booming demand for various products made from the mainland, then called Lona Liemjerata, started to pick up speed after the see-trade routes were established extending all the way to Lona Occidentalls, a big land in the north. From food and apparel to metals and luxury goods, ships carrying cargo and supplies crossed rough seas and straits formed by spread-out ocean islands to reach far-away regions. Due to a lack of a unified currency, the goods were exchanged based on their values in the markets. The oceans were fraught with hidden coral reefs. However, the greatest challenge facing the crews was not finding navigable waters. It was sailing through the dreadful, foggy straits. Because…wherever there was fog pirates sure were lurking there! The fog provided ideal cover for sea bandits, who used the many small islands around the straits for resting places. As trade grew over the years, the frequency of piracy attacks increased and the number of pirate gangs jumped. However, a majority of the sea areas were under the control of two largest groups. It became a matter of luck whether a trading ship could evade capture and pillage. At the beginning, the two large gangs did not have specific areas with defined boundaries that they jealously guarded from each other. Nevertheless, many trading ships began to sail together and developed defence against pirates which forced them to focus more on either the profitable routes or the areas that made it easier for them to fight in combat. 9-雅思词汇:411-462(中文意思请见节目) 1 decade; 2 booming; 3 boom; 4 demand; 5 demanding; 6 various; 7 route; 8 establish; 9 apparel; 10 metal; 11 luxury; 12 cargo; 13 supply; 14 region; 15 unify; 16 currency; 17 exchange; 18 fraught; 19 coral; 20 reef; 21 challenge; 22 crew; 23 navigable; 24 sail; 25 dreadful; 26 foggy; 27 lurk; 28 ideal; 29 bandit; 30 frequency; 31 frequent; 32 piracy; 33attack; 34 gang; 35 majority; 36 evade; 37 capture; 38 pillage; 39 beginning; 40 specific; 41 specification; 42 specify; 43 define; 44 definition; 45 boundary; 46 jealous; 47 jealousy; 48 defence; 49 profitable; 50 profit; 51 combat;
