He is nicknamed “Brother from Mars”, but has become popular on Earth. Chinese singer Hua Chenyu, 26, is always in the headlines. In the music show Recruitment (《天籁之战》), he sang many old songs like My Skating Shoes (《我的滑板鞋》) and made them popular again on social media.
Hua is known for being a “weirdo (怪咖)”. In 2013, he won Hunan TV’s Super Boy singing competition. During the competition, he sang a self-written song and nobody understood the words. Also, in a song called Why Nobody Fights, he sang one sentence “why nobody fights” again and again over different melodies.
For him, music is a way to express his feelings. His parents got divorced (离婚的) when he was a child. He was often left alone at home. One day when Hua was 7, he listened to a symphony (交响乐) and was deeply moved. He fell in love with music and learned to play the flute and piano.
When he was about 12, he tried to write songs. Without experience, he started imitating (模仿) singers including Jay Chou and Leehom Wang. Later, he entered the Wuhan Conservatory of Music.
