This technique, called carousel feeding, is used by killer whales to capture their prey. In cold waters, they work as a team constantly communicating as they split a group of fish from the larger school. Swimming in fast circles, the orcas herd the smaller group of herring into a tightening ball, making it easier to control and harder for fish to escape. Orcas blow bubbles, flash their bellies, and slap the surface with their tails to scare their prey or kill some in the process. As the stunned and dead herring drift from the ball, the orcas suck them into their mouths before spitting out the heads and spines. —— end ——
