But as we fatigue, our turnover decreases. So if you can train your body to run at, and sustain, a higher stride rate, you’ll run faster and finish stronger. Exercise physiologists found that almost all elite distance runners ran at a rate of 180 strides per minute. It seems that 180 is optimum for a running human body. It is hardwired. If you want to run faster, increase your stride length; if you want to slow down, shorten the length of your stride. But always try to maintain your stride frequency, or your turnover. How to do that? 1. Let your arms lead your legs; pump them faster and your legs will naturally follow. 2. Focus on gliding—rather than bouncing—over the ground. That means: take quick, light steps; this will lead to a quicker stride rate and reduce the impact stress that causes injury. 3. Think stride, not speed. Work to increase stride rate, not overall speed. Avoid the tendency to pick up the pace as you focus on increasing your turnover. No matter how slow or how fast you run, maintain that same stride frequency—180 per minute, you will feel the difference. —— end ——
