In 1920s, Stanford University psychologist, Lewis Terman begun a 40-year-long study. He tracked 1,500 California school kids with IQs generally above 140, the threshold he labels as genius, to see how they fared in life and how they compared with other children.
He followed the participants for their lifetimes. Among these people, there were members of National Academy of Sciences, politicians, doctors, professors, and musicians. It seems that intelligence does reveal genius.
But, as Terman would also discover, great intelligence on its own is no guarantee of monumental achievement.
A number of study’s participants struggled to thrive, despite their towering IQ scores. Several dozen flanked out of college at first.
Others, tested for the study but with IQs that were not high enough to make the cut, grew up to become renowned in their fields, most famously Luis Alvarez and William Shockley, both of whom won Nobel Prizes in physics.
