英文原稿
A large tree looms on a gentle slope in Sequoia National Park in Sierra Nevada. With 27 feet diameter at the base, the tree, a giant sequoia, rises to 247 feet in the air. It has nearly 2 billion leaves.
Mammals stop growing once they are sexually mature, but a tree can keep growing. It fortifies its structure by continually adding more wood. This one giant sequoia tree in Sierra Nevada, is estimated to be 3,200 years old.
It has survived all the threats that could have killed it. It’s too strong to be knocked over by wind. Its heartwood and bark are infused with tannic acids that protect against fungi. Wood-boring beetles hardly faze them. Its thick bark is flame resistant. Ground fires are good for sequoia populations, burning away competitions, opening seedlings to get started amid the sunlight and nurturing ash. Lighting hurts the big adults but usually doesn’t kill them.
So it grows older and bigger across the millennia.
