英文原稿
What are your fiercest cravings? Whether you are ducking out for a smoke, going for glory at the blackjack table, or drowning our sorrows in a glass of wine, we all have ways that we seek to push our pleasure buttons.
But what happens when this need for pleasure becomes a full-time pursuit, when our fix turns into something more like a dependence?
Addiction happens and it disrupts pathways and processes that underlie desire, habit formation, pleasure, learning, emotional regulation, and cognition. Addiction causes hundreds of changes in brain anatomy, chemistry, and cell-to-cell signaling. By taking advantage of the brain’s marvelous plasticity, addiction remolds neural circuits to assign supreme value to drugs, gambling or gaming, at the expense of other interests such as health, work, family, or life itself.
It used to be that addiction was considered as a sort of moral failing, but now with a much better understanding of how the human brain works, scientists are learning new clues about the vicious cycle of desire, binge and withdrawal that traps tens of millions of people.
