The reward system, a primitive part of the brain exists to ensure we seek what we need, and it alters us to the sights, sounds, and scents that point us there. It operates in the realm of instinct and reflex, built for the when survival depended on the ability to obtain food and sex before the competition got to them. But the system can trip us up in a world with 24/7 opportunity to fulfill our desires.
Desire is triggered by a spike in dopamine.The flow of dopamine heightens the motivational pull of stimulus. If the levels of dopamine spring far beyond the natural range, they can overpower reason, good intentions, and common sense.
