Bob Dylan, regarded as the voice of a generation for his influential songs from the 1960s onwards, has won the Nobel Prize for Literature in a surprise decision that gave a singer-songwriter one of the world's most prestigious cultural awards.
His songs such as "Blowin' in the Wind," "Masters of War," and "Like a Rolling Stone" captured a spirit of rebellion, dissent and independence.
"Dylan has the status of an icon. His influence on contemporary music is profound," the Swedish Academy said on Thursday, when it awarded the 8 million Swedish crown ($930,000) prize.

For having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition.
对此瑞典科学院常任干事(the permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy)Sara Danis表示,
Of course he deserves it – he’s got it. He’s a great poet – a great poet in the English-speaking tradition. For 54 years he’s been at it, reinventing himself constantly, creating a new identity.
The choice of Dylan may appear surprising, but if you look far back, 2,500 years or so, you discover Homer and Sappho and they wrote poetic texts which were meant to be performed, often with instruments-- it’s the same way for Bob Dylan. We still read Homer and Sappho, and we enjoy it. We can and should read him.
