The spring festival is the loveliest in China, which is comes in February. Everyone loves it so much that they prepare lots of things for the spring festival before it comes. In the spring festival holiday, people do many things. Especially on the first day of lunar year, the young generation congratulates to the old generations with”Happy New Year!”
Then the old generations will give the young generations some lucky money which wrapped with red paper or red envelope. Because red is a color with the meaing of happiness and joyfousness. Lucky money means the old generation‘s love to the young and hope them can have a good luck in this new year. This is the lucky money which lots of the young want.
About the lucky money, there is a wide circulated story. In ancient times, a demon called "evil spirit", the thirty night of sleeping with his hand to touch the child's head, children are often scared so they always cry, then had a headache or fever, finally, they become a fool. Therefore, every family will stay on the night, they didn’t go to sleep till the midnight, whiich called "keep away evil spirits". The couple have a son in old age, as a baby. In thirty years the night, they were afraid of the "evil spirit" doing harm to children, so they took eight coins to play with the kids. When the children were tired and fell asleep, they put eight coins wrapped in red paper on the child's pillow below, the couple did not sleep. In the middle of the night the ghostly wind blowing open the door, blew out the lights," evil spirit" has just reached out to touch the child's head, the pillow will burst with flash, scared" evil spirit" to run away. The next day, the couple told everyone that what had happened last night, after the neghibors learned to dojust like that, the children’s world is at peace. The original eight coins is 0.08 change, but, gradually, it evolved into" lucky money or gift money".
