1. The Spring Festival’s family reunion dinner
It is the most sumptuous and ceremonious dinner of the year for a family. No matter how far they are away from home, people manage to return for a dinner with other family members on Chinese New Year’s Eve. And more than enough food is prepared, showing abundance and wealth.
Most dishes have their own cultural meanings, all showing people’s good wishes for the new year. For example, fish is always served, because fish is pronounced in Chinese as “yu”, which means having more than just enough.
2. Watching the CCTV annual Spring Festival Eve Gala
During the past 23 years, watching the CCTV annual Spring Festival Eve Gala has been popular. At eight o'clock on lunar New Year's eve, families gather in front of the TV, watching, chatting and waiting for the lunar New Year's arrival.
3. Stay Up Late
This custom is called shousui. Chinese stayed up all night in the past, but now most stay up only till the midnight firecrackers and fireworks die down.
4. Waiting for the first Bell ringing of Chinese New Year
The first bell ringing is the symbol of Chinese New Year. Chinese people like to go to a large square where there are huge bells are set up on New Year’s Eve. As the New Year approaches, they count down and celebrate together. The people believe that the ringing of huge bell can drive all the bad luck away and bring the fortune to them. In recent years, some people have begun going to mountain temples to wait for the first ringing. HanShan Temple in Suzhou, is very famous for its first ringing of the bell to Chinese New Year. Many foreigners now go to Hanshan Temple to celebrate Chinese New Year.
Parents usually give their children red envelopes after the reunion dinner, wishing them health, growth, and good studies in the coming year.
5. Lucky money/ red envelop
For many young people, Chinese New Year is just as much about yasuiqian — money in red envelopes traditionally given to children. Kids get red envelopes at home from their parents and relatives.
