The British Museum The British Museum is dedicated（致力，献身）to human history, art and culture, and is located（坐落） in the Bloomsbury area（布鲁姆斯伯里，英国中伦敦附近）of London. Its permanent（永久的，永恒的）collections（收藏品）, numbering some 8 million works, is among the largest and most comprehensive（综合的）in existence and originates from（起源，发源于） all continents（洲）, illustrating（阐明，举例说明）and documenting（用文件证明）the story of human culture from its beginnings to the present. The British Museum was established in 1853, largely based on the collections of the physician（医师，内科医师） and scientist Sir Hans Sloane. The museum first opened to the public on 15 January 1759, in Montagu House, on the site of the current building. Its expansion （扩张）over the following two and a half centuries was largely a result of an expanding British colonial（殖民地的）footprint（足迹，脚印）and has resulted in（导致，结果是）the creation（创造）of several branch institutions（分支机构）, the first being the British Museum (Natural History) in South Kensington（南肯辛顿）in 1881. It opens everyday for free, from 10.00 to 17.30. On Fridays, it opens until 20.30. You can rent an audio guide to help you make most of your visit.
