1971年列侬和妻子小野洋子（Yoko Ono）住在英国乡下一幢豪华的别墅里。年初的某一天的早晨，列侬起床后在洋子的陪伴下，写下了《想象》的歌词。其音乐部分则是在他家那架著名的白色钢琴上写成的。
后来在一次飞行途中，列侬又做了几处修改，在一张纽约希尔顿旅馆的便笺上写下了最后完整的歌词。歌词中没有“爱”或者“自由”这样的字眼，列侬也从没有想到要写一首圣歌（Anthem），但这首歌后来却成了一代人的圣歌。同年6月的某一天，列侬和鼓手Alan White（后Yes乐队的鼓手）和贝司手，德国朋友Klaus Voormann在自家的一间简陋的录音棚内录制了这首歌，列侬亲自弹的钢琴（一架Steinway）。制作人是著名的Phil Spector。他们一共录了3个版本，出现在唱片里的是第2个版本。
列侬录音一向追求即兴，不惜牺牲准确性。一次他甚至把萨克斯风手吹错了调的伴奏用在了歌曲中。可这次他却格外认真，事先把歌词用大写字母工整地打印好，分发给录音乐手们。Spector后来为歌曲加入了管弦乐伴奏，一点也不喧宾夺主，这大概是Spector做得最好的一次。列侬业也曾试验过加入管风琴，但没有用上。Spector事后回忆说，他抱定决心要做一张能够“流行”的专辑，他没有食言。
这张同名专辑于1971年9月9日出版，歌曲《想象》最高升到过公告牌的单曲榜第3名，专辑则最高达到过专辑榜的冠军。但在世界范围内如此成功的单曲却没有在当年的英国发行，直到1975年。2000年，小野洋子重新混缩发行了此曲。
