One day the hare was sitting under a tree.
A tortoise walked slowly past.
The hare laughed at him, "Why are you so slow?"
The tortoise was angry.
"Shall we have a race?" he asked.
The hare laughed louder.
"Okay, let's have a race a week from today. The winner will get as much vegetable as he likes."
The tortoise started to train for the race.
He was sure he could win.
"Why are you training?" asked the hare.
"It will not help you! I am much too fast for you. I will win the race."
Soon it was time for the race.
The animals came to watch.
When the race began, the hare ran quickly ahead.
The tortoise was a long way behind the hare.
"There is no need to hurry," the hare thought.
"I shall stop to rest and wait for the tortoise."
The tortoise plodded along on the hot dusty road.
The hare jumped out at him.
"You did not wait for me!"
he laughed loudly.
The tortoise plodded on.
"It is too hot to run," the hare said to himself.
"I will take a nap, and catch up later."
Soon, he was fast asleep.
The hare had a dream.
He dreamt he had won the race.
Then he heard cheers.
The hare woke up.
He saw the tortoise far ahead, near the finish line.
The hare jumped up.
He ran as fast as he could.
But it was too late!
The tortoise came in first.
All the animals cheered loudly.
Poor hare!
He had lost the race.
The tortoise had won.
The hare had to give him plenty of lettuce.
The tortoise and all his friends laughed at the hare.
The hare had learned his lesson.
