We will be reading from the book Dear John by Nicolas Sparks.
This section comes from the beginning of Chapter 3:
今天我们来继续阅读尼古拉斯·斯帕克思的小说:分手信(亲爱的约翰)。
第三章的开始部分:
“Surfing is a solitary sport, one in which long stretches of boredom are interspersed with frantic activity, and it teaches you to flow with nature, instead of fighting it . . . it’s about getting in the zone. That’s what the surfing magazines say, anyway, and I mostly agree. There’s nothing quite as exciting as catching a wave and living within a wall of water as it rolls toward shore. But I’m not like a lot of those dudes with freeze-dried skin and stringy hair who do it all day, every day, because they think it’s the be-all and end-all of existence. It isn’t. For me, it’s more about the fact that the world is crazy noisy almost all the time, and when you’re out there, it’s not. You’re able to hear yourself think.”

We are learning two new words today: flow and agree.
Flow is spelled. F L O W. Flow.
Flow is both a verb and a noun.
This sound blend can be hard to say. Let’s start by practicing the “FL” sound. To make this sound, place the tip of your tongue behind your front teeth.
Repeat after me: FL
Good. Now let’s try the word flow: Flow
When used as a verb, flow means to move along or out steadily and continuously. Picture water moving in a river and you will understand the word “flow.” The water flows through the river. In the passage we read: “[surfing] teaches you to flow with nature.” And that means, surfing teaches you to move along with nature. When used as a noun, flow just means the action or fact of moving along in a steady stream.
Let’s practice using the word flow in a sentence:
“[surfing] teaches you to flow with nature.”
Our next word is agree.
Agree is spelled A G R E E. Agree.
Agree is a verb.
Repeat after me: Agree
To agree means to have the same opinion about something. Another way to say agree is to say “concur,” or “see eye to eye.” We read this sentence using the word agree: That’s what the surfing magazines say…and I mostly agree.
Repeat after me:
That’s what the surfing magazines say…and I mostly agree.

Today we learned two new words: flow and agree. We used them in the sentences:
“[surfing] teaches you to flow with nature.”
And
That’s what the surfing magazines say…and I mostly agree.
Take one word from the list each day this week and practice it for two minutes. You will find yourself building a strong working vocabulary. Keep practicing and keep learning daily.
