We will be reading a short passage from Chapter 3 of the book “Dear John” by Nicolas Sparks.
今天我们来继续阅读尼古拉斯·斯帕克思的小说:分手信(亲爱的约翰),第三章里的一小段:
“I did gymnastics for years,” she admitted. “I’ve always had a good sense of balance. I suppose I should have said something about that while you were telling me I was going to wipe out.” We spent more than an hour in the water. She popped up every time and rode the waves to shore with ease; though she couldn’t steer the board, I had no doubt that if she wanted to, she would be able to master that in no time.
莎文娜老实承认:"我练体操好几年了。我的平衡感很不错;你说我会摔倒的时候我就应该告诉你。" 我们在水里一个多小时,每次莎文娜都成功站起来,轻轻松松滑向岸边。虽然还没办法控制方向,但是我很确定只要她想练,不用多久就会很在行。

We are learning two new words today: balance and doubt.
Balance is spelled B d as a noun or as a verb.
Repeat after me: Balance
To balance means an even distribution of weight enabling someone to remain upright or steady. In the passage we just read, Savannah mentions that she has a good sense of balance. That means she is able to keep herself upright without falling over.
Repeat the sentence after me:
“I’ve always had a good sense of balance.”
Our next word is doubt.
Doubt is spelled D O U B T. Doubt. Doubt has a silent “b.”
Doubt can be used as a noun or a verb.
Repeat after me: Doubt
Doubt means a feeling of uncertainty or lack of conviction. Some synonyms are uncertainty, and indecision. When used as a verb, doubt means to feel uncertain about. In the passage, we read: I had no doubt that …she would be able to master that in no time. We could say, I was certain that she would be able to master that in no time and it would have the same meaning.
Repeat the sentence after me:
I had no doubt that …she would be able to master that in no time.
Today we learned two new words: balance and doubt
They were used in the sentences:
“I’ve always had a good sense of balance.”
and
I had no doubt that …she would be able to master that in no time.
Take one word from the list each day this week and practice it for two minutes. You will find yourself building a strong working vocabulary. Keep practicing and keep learning daily.
