介绍:
Charlie Chaplin - A Tramp’s Life Charlie Chaplin, whose father had died of acute alcoholism, became a star playing an inebriate for laughs. He indulged in the carnal pleasures of a life spent on the road, but disdained alcohol and approached his craft with a puritanical work ethic, spending much of his time carefully observing human behaviour. With The Little Tramp, Charlie Chaplin created the most recognizable character in history. With the life he led, Chaplin created one of the greatest rags-to-riches stories ever told. Few have experienced such extremes in adulation and revulsion. Chaplin said he decided on the costume on the way to the wardrobe department. He wanted contrast: small hat, big shoes, baggy pants, tight jacket. He wrote how the costume conjured the character: “By the time I walked out of the stage, he was fully born.” In the mid-1930s, when the United States maintained an official hands-off policy toward Adolf Hitler, Charlie Chaplin began a comedy about Hitler called The Great Dictator. The two shared eerie similarities. Adolf Hitler and Charlie Chaplin were born four days apart in April 1889. Both worked themselves up from poverty to achieve positions of autocratic power. Some have speculated the century's most evil man affected a toothbrush moustache to emulate the century's most beloved clown. The Great Dictator premiered in October of 1940, more than a year before Pearl Harbor. It became the biggest hit of Chaplin's career and the catalyst for the most politically active period of his life. He later became a supporter of Joseph Stalin, even praising the dictator's bloody purges and he was eventually banned from America. Twenty years after he left, CharlieChaplin returned to America on business — this trip, organized by his distributor to enhance the marketability of his films. Chaplin would be honored first by the Film Society of Lincoln Center, and then in Hollywood at the Academy Awards. Charlie Chaplin: “Words seem so futile, so feeble.
