Mitsuha is a female high school student who lives in a rural townnestled deep in the mountains. Her father is the mayor and isn`t at home much,and she lives with her little sister and her grandmother. Mitsuha has an honest personality, but she doesn`t like her family`s customs, nor does she like her father participating in an election campaign. She feels sad that she lives in aconfined rural town, and expect the wonderful lifestyle of living in Tokyo.
Taki is a male high school student who lives in central Tokyo. He spends time with his friends, workspart-time at an Italian restaurant, and is interested in architecture and fine arts.
One day, Mitsuha has a dream where she is a young man. Taki also has adream where he is a female high school student in a town in the mountains thathe has never been to. As a comet （彗星）approaches Earth, their dreams and lives start getting entangled. One day Mitsuha wakes upas Taki. Taki one day wakes up as Mitsuha. For a few days they switch bodies （交换身体） from time to time untilone afternoon they lose complete contact.
Eventually, the two come to therealization that their spirits are drifting into each other's bodies when they dream. The intimacy of the connection （联系）is in contrast to the fact that they've never even met. However, a bond （纽带，关系） begins to form between the two, as they come to realize they might understand each other better than anyone else.
