How is everyone doing today?
So today we're going to study "modal verbs"
Which is really just talking about what you "can" do ...
and what you "should" do ...
This grammar is very useful, because people want to recommend things for us to do...
For example:
What can I do in Beijing?
What SHOULD I do in Beijing?
Does anyone know the difference?
What CAN I do ... means all the possibilities
What SHOULD I do .... means to give a recommendation
Can is ALL the things you 能做 in a place.
In Beijing, you CAN go visit the old CCTV building in 西城 district...
But maybe it's boring
You SHOULD go visit the NEW CCTV building in 国贸.
I forgot to talk about "can't" and "shouldn't"
"I can't decide where to go on my vacation."
"Can" isn't incorrect..
It's just that the meaning is different.
In fact there's another option
Not in this lesson
"could"
"You could go to India, you could go to Thailand, you could go to Malaysia."
"You SHOULD go to India, though. It's my favorite place."
Could means "one option you have"
Should means "the option I think you should choose"
So number 1 is:
I can't decide where to go on my vacation.
You should go to India. It's my favorite place to visit.
Let's try another one
So here the question is like "When is the best time to go?"
The answer is "can" because there is no recommendation. Anytime is OK!
When should I come visit your city?
You should come to Hudson, New York in the fall, because the leaves are changing colors.
What can I do in your city?
So there are two question: When should I come to your city? What can I do in your city?
One last question, then we'll continue on..
I wish I could come right now...
What shouldn't I do in your city?
You shouldn't go to dinner in Hudson, the restaurants are too expensive!
"You shouldn't take the bus, because there are too many people."
One more question: What CAN'T I do in your city?
In my city, you can't see the ocean.
In my city, you also can't really enjoy nature.
Can't smoke in restaurants? It's not China anymore!
"You can't smoke indoors"
"You can't smoke in public places."
You can't smoke in public places... is that true?
When I lived in Chengdu, you could smoke in the elevators
that's probably a good policy then..
"You can't gamble in my city. It's illegal."
Overfishing is illegal...
You can't drive drunk in my town, or else you'll go to jail.
The next thing we're going to do today
is talk about some interesting places we've been.
I need a helper.
I need someone to tell me an interesting place they've been...
And the rest of us are going to ask a question about that place.
Who wants to be the helper?
So you went to Chengdu recently?
Have you gone anywhere interesting recently?
I went to Berlin, Germany for vacation last year.
James has been to Melbourne
Let's each think of a question to ask James about Melbourne
There are some sentences in the book we can use...
Or we can think of our own.
What did you like most about Melbourne?
Good answer to Annie's question "to visit Melbourne"
That was what you liked most about Melbourne?
We don't have a really easy way to say that..
Just that "the temperature changes quickly from day to night."
We can do this more in the future!
We still have some time ... would you like to answer questions about Chengdu?
Let's ask Annie one question about Chengdu.
"It rained every day that I was in Chengdu."
I don't know why you get nervous... I ask you quetsions all the time!
We will definitely do more of this in the future!
We'll try to more things like that in the future.
We talked a little bit about this in thet last class
But the next lesson is "Common Health Complaints"
We're going to talk 更深 about this topic
